Balancing Prana Flow: The Purpose of Hatha Yoga

The main aim of Hatha yoga is to bring about a balanced flow of prana in Ida and Pingala Nadis. Ida represents the left Nostril and Pingala’s right nostril: Ida represents the moon, and Pingala represents the sun. Hatha is a combination of two words, Ha and Tha. Ha is the solar force, and Tha is the lunar force.

To bring about a balance between these two forces, the body must first be purified by the Shatkarmas, Asanas, Pranayamas, Mudras, and Bandhas. Hatha yoga aims to balance these two flows.

There are 72,000 Nadis in the psychic body. Nadis are the subtle channels through which the pranic forces flow. Ten are major out of the large number of Nadis in the psychic body. Of these, three are the most significant: Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna. The flow of these Nadis influences all activities in the body. The most important of these three is Sushumna.
Sushumna is the most important Nadi when the prana flow in Ida and Pingala is balanced, and then the prana flows through shushumna. When the prana flows through shushumna, than the mind is controlled. And meditation is successful when the mind is controlled. So Sushumna Nadi is the spiritual channel.
